A poorly closed box that opens on the stairs, a power cut on moving day, a signed quote without checking the provider’s insurance: we all know someone this has happened to. Successfully moving with peace of mind relies less on the number of boxes and more on a few decisions made at the right time, well before the big day.

Check the mover’s reliability before signing the quote

Most guides recommend comparing three quotes. We won’t go back to that. What is often missing is the regulatory verification of the provider.

The moving activity is regulated: check the SIRET and the registration in the transporters’ register before signing anything. A compliant mover has professional liability insurance covering damages during transport. Without this coverage, a broken piece of furniture or a lost item is your responsibility.

The quote itself must adhere to specific formalities. It should mention the estimated volume, the departure and arrival addresses, the details of the service, the procedure for reservations in case of breakage, and the amounts excluding and including tax. If any of these elements are missing, it’s a warning sign. You can also find moving advice on Immo Radar that highlights these points of vigilance to avoid unpleasant surprises with a less scrupulous company.

One last reflex: ask if the company subcontracts the transport. Some companies accept the contract and then hand the service over to a third party, complicating the management of disputes.

Energy contracts and address change: two distinct processes

It is often thought that it is enough to notify your energy supplier to “transfer” the contract. In reality, an energy contract does not transfer from one residence to another. You must terminate the contract linked to the old residence and then subscribe to an offer for the new address.

Ideally, you should initiate the subscription about two weeks before moving in. This timeframe allows the network manager to activate the meter. Arriving at a residence without electricity or gas on a Friday night is no small matter, especially in winter.

The online address change service and its limitations

An official online service allows you to report your move to several public organizations in one step. You can use it up to three months before the departure and up to one month after.

But beware: this online service does not cover private contracts. Bank, home insurance, internet provider, mutual insurance – each requires a separate process. Failing to contact your insurer before moving can pose a real problem: the address of the residence directly influences the rate and coverage of home insurance.

  • Organizations covered by the online service: health insurance fund, family allowance fund, tax service, registration on electoral rolls.
  • Contracts to terminate or modify manually: energy supplier, telecom and internet provider, bank, home insurance, mutual insurance.
  • Specific process: the vehicle registration must be updated within the month following the address change.

Packaging fragile items: the method that truly limits breakage

Packing your belongings seems obvious. What makes the difference is how you protect the items inside the box, not the box itself.

Each fragile item must be individually wrapped with bubble wrap or crumpled kraft paper. Stacking dishes without separation creates a domino effect of breakage at the first turn of the truck. Glasses should be secured vertically, never flat. Frames and mirrors travel on their edge, wedged between two layers of foam or fabric.

For furniture, the usefulness of moving covers and blankets is often underestimated. They prevent scratches during loading and protect against friction in the truck. Opinions vary on this point, but wrapping a solid wood piece of furniture in stretch film alone is generally not enough to prevent marks.

Labeling boxes: room and level of fragility

Writing “kitchen” on a box doesn’t tell the person carrying it anything. You save time by adding a content indication (“plates,” “pans”) and a color code or a visible mention for fragile boxes. On moving day, fragile boxes are loaded last and unloaded first.

Lease notice and home insurance: two calendar traps

The notice period for terminating the lease depends on the geographical area and the type of rental. Failing to respect the legal deadline risks paying additional rent for a residence you have already left. Check the exact conditions in your contract before sending the registered letter.

On the insurance side, the new address changes the risk profile of the residence. An apartment in a flood zone or in a high-claim area will not be covered at the same rate as a house on the outskirts. Subscribe to the insurance for the new residence before handing over the keys, not after.

  • Send the lease termination letter by registered mail with acknowledgment of receipt, respecting the notice period indicated in the contract.
  • Contact your insurer at least two weeks before moving in to adjust or subscribe to a new home insurance contract.
  • Plan for overlapping coverage: both the old and new residences must be insured simultaneously during the transition period.

The stress of moving rarely comes from the transport itself. It arises from administrative oversights, poorly managed contracts, and providers chosen too quickly. Taking half a day to check the transporter’s register, anticipate energy subscription, and separate public processes from private contracts is enough to avoid most of the problems that movers encounter every week.
